Diabetic Foot Care – Vibration Perception Threshold (VPT)

Advanced diagnostic screening to detect early nerve damage and prevent diabetic foot complications.

What is VPT Testing?

Vibration Perception Threshold (VPT) testing is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to detect peripheral sensory neuropathy in diabetic patients. The test measures the lowest level of vibration a person can feel using a specialized device known as a Digital Biothesiometer.

Why VPT Screening is Important

Early Neuropathy Detection

Identifies early nerve damage caused by diabetes before symptoms become severe.

Prevents Foot Ulcers

Detects loss of protective sensation which is strongly linked to diabetic foot ulcers.

Better Diabetes Management

Allows doctors to monitor nerve health and take preventive measures early.

Improves Long-Term Foot Health

Regular screening reduces the risk of infection, ulceration, and serious complications.

How the VPT Test Works

A handheld medical device called a biothesiometer is placed on specific points of the foot. The device produces gentle vibrations that gradually increase in intensity.

The patient signals when the vibration is first felt. This reading helps doctors determine nerve sensitivity and detect peripheral neuropathy.

The procedure is completely painless and typically takes only a few minutes.

Clinical Significance

A VPT reading greater than 15 volts indicates a significantly higher risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers.

Patients with elevated readings may have a 6 to 10 times higher risk of foot ulceration, making early screening extremely important.

Routine VPT testing helps clinicians monitor nerve function and implement preventive care strategies.

Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Assessment

Monofilament Test

Detects loss of protective sensation in the feet.

Ankle Brachial Index

Measures blood circulation in the legs and detects vascular disease.

Podiascan Analysis

Measures pressure distribution across the foot to prevent ulcers.

Protect Your Feet with Early Screening

Regular diabetic foot screening can prevent serious complications. If you have diabetes, routine VPT testing is strongly recommended.
