What is a Sleep Study?

A sleep study, also called polysomnography, is a diagnostic test used to evaluate sleep patterns and identify sleep-related disorders. The test monitors brain activity, eye movement, heart rate, breathing patterns, and oxygen levels while a person sleeps.

Sleep studies help doctors diagnose conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, and other sleep disorders that can affect overall health and daily functioning.

Why Sleep Studies are Important

Diagnose Sleep Apnea

Identifies breathing interruptions and oxygen level changes during sleep.

Detect Sleep Disorders

Helps diagnose insomnia, narcolepsy, and abnormal sleep behaviors.

Improve Sleep Quality

Provides information needed to treat sleep-related health issues.

Support Heart & Brain Health

Untreated sleep disorders can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

How a Sleep Study Works

During the test, sensors are placed on the scalp, face, chest, and legs to monitor different body functions during sleep.

Additional sensors may measure breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and heart rate. A nasal cannula is often used to monitor airflow.

The collected data helps doctors analyze sleep stages and detect breathing interruptions or abnormal movements during sleep.

Types of Sleep Studies

In-Lab Polysomnography

A comprehensive overnight sleep test conducted in a sleep laboratory under medical supervision.

Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)

A portable test performed at home to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)

A daytime test that measures how quickly a person falls asleep, often used to diagnose narcolepsy.

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)

Evaluates a person’s ability to stay awake in a quiet environment.

Preparation for the Test

Patients are usually advised to avoid caffeine or alcohol before the test. Following the instructions provided by the clinic ensures accurate results.

Sleep studies are recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as loud snoring, choking during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, or difficulty staying asleep.

Diagnose and Treat Sleep Disorders Early

A sleep study helps identify underlying sleep problems and improves overall health and quality of life.
