What is a Holter Monitor?

A Holter monitor is a wearable, non-invasive device that continuously records the electrical activity of your heart (ECG) for 24 to 48 hours or sometimes longer. It helps detect heart rhythm abnormalities that may not appear during a standard ECG performed in a clinic.

The device uses small electrodes attached to your chest which connect to a portable recording unit worn on a belt or strap. While wearing the device, you can go about your normal daily routine.

Why Holter Monitoring is Important

Detects Heart Rhythm Problems

Helps identify irregular heartbeats such as atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, and bradycardia.

Evaluates Symptoms

Useful for diagnosing palpitations, dizziness, blackouts, fainting (syncope), or unexplained chest discomfort.

Monitors Heart Health

Tracks heart activity continuously during normal daily activities.

Evaluates Treatment Effectiveness

Helps doctors assess whether medications or treatments are working properly.

How the Holter Test Works

A trained technician attaches small adhesive electrodes to your chest. These electrodes connect to a portable recorder that continuously records your heart's electrical activity.

The monitor is usually worn for 24 to 48 hours, though longer monitoring periods may sometimes be recommended.

During this time, patients are encouraged to continue their normal daily activities while keeping the device dry.

Patient Instructions

While wearing the Holter monitor, patients may be asked to keep a diary of symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, palpitations, or unusual activities.

This helps doctors correlate symptoms with recorded heart rhythm data.

You should avoid bathing or swimming during the monitoring period to keep the device dry.

Preparation and Safety

Preparation

Patients are advised to shower before the appointment since bathing is not possible while wearing the device.

Skin Preparation

Men with significant chest hair may need a small area shaved for electrode placement.

Safe and Painless

The test is completely safe and painless. Some patients may experience mild skin irritation from the adhesive.

Monitor Your Heart Health with Holter Testing

Holter monitoring helps detect hidden heart rhythm abnormalities and provides valuable information for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
